Jarred Vanderbilt suffered a full dislocation of his right pinkie during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 108-90 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 on Tuesday night, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
The injury occurred during an attempt to defend a dunk by Thunder forward Chet Holmgren. Vanderbilt collided with the backboard while trying to contest the play and immediately appeared to be in significant pain afterward.
Following the impact, Vanderbilt screamed in pain on the floor, leading the Lakers to quickly call a timeout as medical staff attended to him.
After the game, Lakers head coach JJ Redick addressed Vanderbilt’s condition and emotional state following the injury.
“He’s in as good of spirits as you can be in this situation,” Redick said after the loss. “Obviously, frustrated with what happened.”
The injury creates another setback for the Lakers as they attempt to recover from a difficult Game 1 defeat against Oklahoma City.
Vanderbilt played a supporting role during Los Angeles’ first-round series against the Houston Rockets, averaging 3.6 points and 4.4 rebounds while contributing defensively and providing energy off the bench.
