New Dallas Mavericks president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri did not offer a firm commitment regarding Jason Kidd’s future as head coach during his introductory comments on Monday, saying the organization plans to fully evaluate every aspect of the franchise moving forward.
Although Kidd remains under contract for several more seasons, Ujiri indicated that no decisions will be made without a complete review of the team’s structure and direction.
“He’s done a great job, but we are going to look at this thing from head to toe,” Ujiri said. “That’s the right way to look at an organization and evaluate in every single way we can.”
Ujiri explained that he has followed a similar approach throughout his executive career. When he previously joined the Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors, he inherited established head coaches in George Karl and Dwane Casey and ultimately kept both in place for several years.
Still, Ujiri emphasized that he first wants to spend time speaking directly with Kidd before determining the next steps.
“I’m going to hear coach Jason Kidd out, his thoughts on everything,” Ujiri said. “Because some of the stuff here, I don’t know. For me, it’s that simple. If you go back to the history, it’s the same thing. I have to follow the process here. I’m excited to meet with him.”
Kidd and Ujiri also share history dating back more than a decade.
During the 2014 playoff matchup between Kidd’s Brooklyn Nets and Ujiri’s Toronto Raptors, Kidd famously remarked that he did not know who Ujiri was, creating a memorable moment between the two figures now working within the same organization.
