Ron Harper admits he still finds it hard to believe what his son, Dylan Harper, accomplished during his impressive rookie season with the San Antonio Spurs.
Speaking with TMZ Sports at Billy “Swagga Vance” Jones’ golf invitational, the five-time NBA champion said watching Dylan thrive at the highest level has been a surreal experience.
“Is Dylan Harper really my son?! It’s really awesome and a great time to see him play,” Ron said.
He explained that seeing his son develop into one of the league’s brightest young talents has exceeded even his own expectations.
“The experience that he has and seeing where he’s come from growing up. It’s like most of the time I sit at the game and be like, ‘That’s my son.’ I’m shocked,” Harper said.
“Because you know, you expect your kids to be good, but you don’t expect them to be overachievers, like he’s really overachieving now. He’s showing me up right now.”
Although the Spurs fell short against the Knicks in the NBA Finals, Harper believes the season was an important step forward for the young team.
“[The NBA Finals are] definitely a learning experience. They had a very young basketball team, a young coaching staff – definitely a learning experience. I think that they achieved the goal that they had this past season. And now the goal is a little bit higher.”
Looking ahead, Harper said San Antonio must continue to mature while embracing the increased expectations that come with its rapid rise.
“Everybody’s going to be trying to gun for them for 82 games now.”
