Lakers never seriously pursued LeBron James return

Although Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka publicly stated the organization wanted LeBron James to return, people close to the four-time NBA champion reportedly believed the team was never seriously committed to bringing him back.

According to ESPN, James and the Lakers never held discussions before free agency.

Reports also indicated the veteran forward was willing to accept a significant pay cut if the franchise presented a convincing plan to strengthen the roster.

For much of the previous year, it seemed likely James would leave Los Angeles in the summer of 2026.

However, he embraced a complementary role alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves during the regular season before returning to the forefront in the playoffs after both teammates were sidelined by injuries.

Following the Lakers’ second-round elimination by the Oklahoma City Thunder, James admitted he had even considered retirement before ultimately deciding to continue his career.

Rather than allowing speculation to continue throughout the offseason, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on June 30 that James informed the Lakers he would enter free agency and evaluate opportunities elsewhere.

After weighing offers from the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets, James ultimately agreed to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.

“He didn’t take the easy way,” a Sixers source told ESPN. “He’s comfortable being uncomfortable. Which a lot of people aren’t.”
