Venus Williams is on the comeback trail again!
The 43-year-old has announced her intention to play Indian Wells and Miami this year, and cited her sister Serena as inspiration.
“One of my goals is to play in the United States,” Williams said in a recent YouTube post. “To play in the Miami Open, to play at Indian Wells – I have not played there since 2019, due to injuries, and it’s a long time.
“That is one of my big goals on the horizon, to be there and do that – amongst many other goals on the court. My little sister Serena told me I’m not allowed to quit. Of course I would never quit, but it’s the mandate, she said no. So I will be back on the court, and in the meantime, I just have to go back to rehab.”
Williams was hobbled after taking a fall during her first-round clash with Elina Svitolina last July at Wimbledon, and wasn’t able to get her body right for the rest of the season. She would eventually take a cortisone shot in her knee during the summer, and play four more matches that included a Top-20 win over Veronika Kudermetova in Cincinnati.
She lost in the first round at the US Open to Greet Minnen of Belgium, 6-1, 6-1.
Williams, the WTA’s leader in Grand Slam singles titles among active players, is currently ranked 474.
