Roman Abramovich’s net worth soars amid Chelsea protests and Todd Boehly fury

Chelsea supporters voiced their thoughts on the club’s current ownership at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night before the Blues beat Southampton 4-0 in the Premier League.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have become unpopular among some sections of the fanbase since buying the football club from Roman Abramovich. The Russian billionaire led the club to new heights after completing his purchase of the Blues in 2003.

However, following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Abramovich was forced to sell his assets and lost his UK citizenship. Since then, Chelsea have dropped down the pecking order and while this season they are in with a shout of a return to the Champions League, the club has failed to win any silverware under its current owners.

Ill will towards the ownership group reached fever pitch on Tuesday as supporters protested against Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Among the chants were those in favour of Abramovich and with this in mind, football.london has taken a closer look at the Russian and his current net worth.

Abramovich’s net worth

Unsurprisingly, Abramovich’s net worth took a dive between 2021 and 2022 when the conflict in Ukraine took a hold. At the height of his wealth, Abramovich was worth a cool £11.4bn.

However, that decreased to as little as £5.4bn in 2022. Since then, the billionaire has been steadily rebuilding his wealth and it is now soaring again, thought to be worth anywhere between £6.04bn, according to Bloomberg, and £7.6bn according to Forbes.

How does Abramovich’s wealth compare to Boehly?

According to Forbes, Boehly is worth a little less than Abramovich at present. The American’s net worth is valued at £6.6bn, approximately a billion less than Abramovich, per the same publication, right now and a lot less than the Russian’s net worth when he was owner of Chelsea.

Meanwhile, the economic news site adds that Behdad Eghbali, the founder of Clearlake Capital and regular attendee of matches at Stamford Bridge, is worth £3.4bn.

What has Abramovich done since leaving Chelsea?

Since leaving Chelsea, Abramovich has kept a low profile in regards to public comments. However, he has taken on a role as mediator in the Russia/Ukraine conflict thanks to his relationship with Vladimir Putin.

It is understood he has liaised between Kyiv and Moscow regarding the exchange of prisoners of war. Abramovich has reportedly helped hundreds return to their homes.

He currently owns stakes in Russian steel giant Evraz and nickel producer Norilsk Nickel. He has also been sanctioned by the UK, EU, Canada, Australia and Switzerland since the war in Ukraine.
