Spanish stars are vanishing from Madrid’s Magic Box.
Paula Badosa withdrew from the Mutua Madrid Open due to a lingering back injury.
World No. 9 Badosa announced her withdrawal on social media before her scheduled opener against Veronika Kudermetova.
“Hello everyone. I wanted to let you know that unfortunately I won’t be able to compete in the Madrid Open,” Badosa posted. “I tried everything possible until the last moment because you know how excited I am to play at home, but it is a complicated injury.
“I hope to be 100% soon. A big hug, Paula.”
The Spanish women’s No. 1 departure comes a day after two-time Madrid champion and Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz was forced out due to injury.
The back issue has limited Badosa to 22 matches this season.
The 27-year-old Badosa appeared to aggravate the injury in her Miami Open win over Clara Tauson. Badosa withdrew from Miami before her scheduled round of 16 clash vs. 19-year-old Filipina Alexandra Eala and has not played a tournament since then.
