During Thursday’s press conferences, Denver Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth and head coach Michael Malone shared some key insights regarding the team’s approach to the upcoming season.
One significant revelation, according to Bennett Durando of The Denver Post, is that the Nuggets are considering the possibility of adding a 3-point shooter before the trade deadline.
Booth expressed concern about the team’s current shooting balance, especially with non-shooters like Russell Westbrook, Aaron Gordon, and Peyton Watson in the regular rotation.
“We are riding a fine line with our shooting when you have Russell Westbrook, Aaron Gordon, and Peyton Watson all in your rotation,” Booth said.
“And I think Christian (Braun) should be left out of that conversation when he shoots 42.9% above the break last year. But it is gonna be a fine line. It’s something we have to monitor. If we need to address our shooting at the trade deadline, we’ll do it.”
The emphasis on Braun’s shooting, coupled with the concern over the spacing provided by other rotation players, suggests the Nuggets may keep a close eye on their offensive efficiency as the season progresses.
Booth’s openness to acquiring additional shooting underscores Denver’s intent to maintain its competitive edge, especially in a Western Conference where shooting is a premium.
Additionally, an interesting note from the press conference was that while Westbrook wasn’t mentioned as a potential starter, he could still be a key contributor in the closing lineup.
This hints at Malone’s intent to maximize Westbrook’s strengths in key moments, potentially using him in late-game situations where his experience and playmaking could be crucial.
