Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone has revealed plans to shift forward Michael Porter Jr. to the power forward position for the 2024-25 season.
Porter has intentionally gained weight during the offseason, now weighing around 237 pounds, an increase from his listed 218 pounds last season, via Ryan Blackburn.
The 26-year-old forward aims to play at around 232 pounds to handle the physical demands of the position better.
Malone expressed confidence in Porter’s ability to adapt, stating, “We have to look at him playing some four this year. I think using Michael as that Stretch 4 could prove to be very beneficial for us.”
Porter’s improved physique is the result of his commitment to offseason workouts, as Malone added, “That guy’s a gym rat, he loves the game, and he’s put the time into his body.”
Last season, Porter averaged 16.7 points, 7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in 31.7 minutes.
His shift to power forward will offer the Nuggets greater versatility in their lineup.
Porter’s ability to stretch the floor and his increased strength make him an intriguing fit in Malone’s system.
The Nuggets are looking to capitalize on Porter’s growth to maintain their status as top contenders in the Western Conference.
Malone also praised Porter’s dedication, saying, “He’s been really impressive early on.”
The decision to play Porter at the four could create matchup problems for opposing teams due to his size and shooting ability.
Porter’s three-point shooting remains a key asset, and playing as a stretch four will give the Nuggets more spacing on the floor.
His defensive responsibilities are also likely to increase with the positional shift.
Denver hopes that Porter’s offseason improvements will translate into increased productivity on both ends of the court.
The Nuggets will look to build on their successful 2023-24 campaign as they aim for another deep playoff run.
