One of the most enduring player-coach relationships in tennis has come to an end. Maria Sakkari and Tom Hill announced a split today, the Greek star taking to Instagram to break the news and praise Hill for his service.
The pair had worked together for six years.
“Tom, Thank you for all the emotions, the support on and off the court, and the belief you had in me since day one,” Sakkari wrote. “We grew together, and you helped me realize that everything is possible. Not only did you make me a better tennis player, but you also made me a better person.
Sakkari reached a career-high ranking of No.3 in March of 2022, and reached two Grand Slam semifinals in 2021. She will drop out of the Top 10 next week for the first time since September 2021.
In a statement, Hill said: “Working with Maria has been an absolute privilege and I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together. We both believe this is a step forward in our respective paths, allowing us to explore new opportunities and exciting challenges that lie ahead. Thank you, Maria, for the amazing journey. I’m excited about what the future holds for you!”
