LeBron James was reportedly close to revealing his free agency decision before plans unexpectedly changed.
During an appearance on 92.3 The Fan’s Baskin and Phelps show, Cleveland radio host Andy Baskin shared what a source told him about the timeline surrounding James’ announcement.
“Here’s what I was told yesterday about the whole LeBron situation. Last week, LeBron’s crew was probably ready to make an announcement, especially because they were in New York,” Baskin said. “The world had their eyes on New York because of the World Cup as well.
“They were probably comfortable making an announcement as early as last week. And then, people were telling them what to do. There’s a little bit of irritation … Irritated was the word I was told, by the commissioner pushing them … so they decided to hold back.”
The comments came after NBA commissioner Adam Silver publicly acknowledged that James’ delayed decision was preventing the league from finalizing its 2026-27 schedule, something Baskin suggested may have influenced the timeline.
James has dominated headlines this offseason since informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not return next season.
Although he announced his departure weeks ago, the four-time MVP has yet to reveal where he plans to continue his career.
