Internal salary discussions within the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly created additional tension this season involving LeBron James and his future with the franchise.
According to ESPN, team officials conducted informal exercises during games in which observers were asked to evaluate James strictly as an anonymous player, ignoring both his name and career accomplishments.
Different market values were discussed, including figures tied to the NBA’s full midlevel exception at $14.1 million, along with estimates of $20 million, $25 million, and $30 million.
For James, who continues to perform at an All-Star level despite being one of the oldest players in the league, the process could understandably be viewed as dismissive considering everything he has meant to the franchise.
Still, James publicly downplayed any idea of major conflict between himself and the Lakers after their playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“There’s no static from me,” James told ESPN.
