Despite some inconsistencies for future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson, the identity of being a pure shooter remains, as it still draws interest from different teams.
Speaking to this offseason, the Miami Heat have moved to acquire major assets to make them a title contender and are now seeking shooters to fill out their roster, per Shams Charania.
“They hope not. The Miami Heat’s number one priority right now is to acquire shooting. And they found their No. 1 target for that…Klay Thompson. The problem is Klay Thompson has one year left on his Mavs contract so…”
On the other hand, Dallas is already below the tax line to buy out the final year of Thompson’s contract, worth about $17.46 million.
Speaking to Jae Fischer during a Bleacher Report livestream, the Mavericks are aiming to keep the sharpshooter for a potential trade this season.
“The Mavericks, to my understanding, have been keen on wanting to keep Klay Thompson for a trade. The word has been consistent, though, that Dallas does not want to buy out Klay Thompson and see him walk for nothing.”
The four-time champion has kept his market value, although it decreased in averages from his transition after injuries and a different jersey.
“They want to hold a high price for Klay, for now, because they do envision this group being a playoff-caliber-ish, play-in-caliber team around Cooper Flagg next year,” Fischer added.
The Heat has been approaching this offseason aggressively, but in terms of Thompson’s final-year contract with Dallas, it is also possible to draw interest from other teams.
Thompson averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 38.3% from behind the arc during the previous season.
