Arsenal are busy preparing to face Newcastle United in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
The Gunners will need to overcome a 2-0 deficit from the first leg to reach the Wembley Stadium showpiece next month. Should Arsenal manage to turn the tie against the Magpies around, they would face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in next month’s final.
The semi-final stage saw VAR being used for the first time in the competition this season. Prior to that, on-field decisions made by the referee and assistant referees were set in stone.
There is another change that has been introduced for the semi-final stage of the Carabao Cup. For the first time this season, it’s possible that a tie can go to extra time if the aggregate score finishes as a draw.
Should Arsenal win by a two-goal margin against Newcastle on Wednesday night, it would then set up an extra 30 minutes of additional time. If the tie was to remain level after this, the winner would be determined by a penalty shootout.
Arsenal go into the game on the back of an emphatic 5-1 win over Manchester City in the Premier League to boost their chances of beating Liverpool to the title. Newcastle, meanwhile, were beaten 2-1 at home to Fulham and have now lost two of their last three matches.
The Gunners have already had a penalty shootout this season, having lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup third-round tie at the Emirates last month. Mikel Arteta and Co. will be hoping for a much different outcome this time around if the clash against Newcastle does go to spot-kicks.
