David Ferrer is stepping down as Spain’s Davis Cup captain at the end of 2026, and the legendary Spaniard may already have his next assignment in mind.
According to Spanish sports daily AS, Ferrer is planning a return to tour-level coaching in 2027, potentially joining forces with a high-profile international player. The publication reports that Ferrer turned down an offer to coach a top foreign player earlier this season, but is now ready to make the move.
The former World No. 3, who amassed 734 wins and 27 ATP singles titles during his illustrious career, has captained Spain since 2023, guiding the nation to the Davis Cup final in 2025. He took over for Sergi Bruguera.
Ferrer has not revealed his next destination, or even spoken about making a lateral move. Instead he said he wanted to begin a new chapter.
The possibilities for that chapter are tantalizing for the former French Open finalist who was revered for his energizer bunny indefatigability, his tenacity and his clay-court prowess. Ferrer spent 292 consecutive weeks inside the ATP’s Top 10 during his career.
Which established star might be looking for the Spaniard’s trademark grit, discipline and knack for winning on the big stages?
It makes for an intriguing off-season. With Carlos Alcaraz’s former coach Juan Carlos Ferrero also expected to return to the coaching ranks in 2027 (check out our recent video on that), we’ll be keeping a close eye on any developments.
