Cole Palmer amazed as Chelsea ace discovers family member had UK number one single

Cole Palmer was left gobsmacked when discovering that a member of his family has a chart-topping legacy – one that was clinched before the young Chelsea star came into the world.

The 22-year-old took time out to sit down with British DJ Kenny Allstar for a segment with TNT Sports, diving into his rich family heritage. The BBC Radio 1Xtra Rap Show presenter dropped a bombshell on Palmer, disclosing that his great uncle sang lead vocals for ‘Sweet Sensation’, a band that clinched the No. 1 spot in the UK singles chart back in ’74.

Allstar enlightened an unsuspecting Palmer: “This record is from a band called Sweet Sensation,” further hitting home the revelation by adding: “Your great uncle was in this band. They had a No1 in the 1970s. This vinyl here went No1 here in the UK.”

Overwhelmed, Palmer confessed his surprise, saying: “I didn’t even know that”. Adding to the astonishment, Palmer was shown footage of ‘Sad Sweet Dreamer’ being performed on Top of the Pops by the Manchester-spawned group, yet struggled to pinpoint which band member was his relative: “He’s too young there I can’t recognise him.”

He conceded knowing something about the song but never delved into its past, reports the Mirror. “Obviously people in my family have talked about it. But I’ve never listened to it or researched it.”

With his surname Palmer already carrying weight in UK music, the Chelsea ace is now ensuring it’s making waves on the global stage through his prowess on the pitch. Despite a recent dip in form with just one goal from his last seven appearances, he remains one of the top performers of the Premier League 2024/25 season, boasting an impressive tally of 14 goals and six assists.

However, amidst this challenging spell, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is keeping his confidence buoyed. After their comprehensive 4-0 victory over Southampton on Tuesday, the Italian coach shared some uplifting words with Palmer: “I said he has been lucky in his career,” he revealed.

“He has shared changing rooms with top players and he knows they go through bad moments. Keep working, keep laughing, enjoy your football.”
