Chelsea have a longstanding interest in Evan Ferguson but there are multiple clubs from England and abroad looking at the Brighton striker.
football.london understands Ferguson is under consideration by the Blues, who want to add another No.9 option to compete with Nicolas Jackson. Ferguson could well be on the move before next week’s February 3 deadline with Brighton understood to be open to selling the striker, whose season has been hampered by injury problems.
The 20-year-old forward has featured just 12 times in the Premier League for the Seagulls this season and has been missing for the last seven games because of an ankle problem. Both a loan move and a permanent deal have been rumoured as Chelsea consider their options in the latter stages of the transfer window.
However, there is a major obstacle in the race to sign the highly-rated Republic of Ireland international and it is in the form of former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter. West Ham United appointed Potter earlier in the month and the new Irons boss wants to reunite with Ferguson, who he gave his Brighton debut to in August 2021.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler was asked about Ferguson and his future on Thursday and the German explained how the striker is not letting speculation impact his time at the Amex Stadium. He said: “My job is to focus on the work with the players outside on the pitch, that is what we do.
“We trained very well yesterday, he trained well yesterday. The other things we cannot influence. He knows my thoughts, the thoughts of the club, we know the thoughts from Evan. That’s the important thing.
“I’m happy he is in our squad, I want to keep working with him. Like I said, it’s always important to discuss with him the importance of the development of the player.
“That’s the main thing of the club. We want to improve the development of the players, we want to help him, therefore we need an exchange, then we see what makes sense for the player in the next six months, we will make a decision together, it’s not an individual decision.
“I felt in the conversations that I have had with Evan that he only wants to play, that is the main thing. No matter if it is here or at another club.”
