Chelsea suffer new injury blow minutes into Aston Villa clash

Chelsea have been handed a fresh injury worry over defender Trevoh Chalobah with the centre-back forced to withdraw from the Premier League match against Aston Villa with a back injury.

The defender has been a regular in Chelsea‘s starting lineup since returning from a loan spell with Crystal Palace in the January transfer window.

He was in the starting XI for the clash at Villa Park but went down in a challenge after just eight minutes. The centre-back appeared to be holding his back or his side and was after receiving medical treatment, was replaced by Tosin Adarabioyo.

Should he be out for any amount of time, it will come as another significant injury blow to Chelsea. The team currently have eight players on the sidelines through injury, including strikers Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu.

Centre-backs Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badishile are continuing their own recoveries from injury and hope to be back available for selection next month. An injury to Chalobah does leave the Blues slightly short on centre-back options until they return.

The change at Villa Park didn’t seem to have too much impact on the Blues, with Enzo Maresca‘s men taking the lead just a minute later through Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder got on the end of a Pedro Neto cross to finish from close range to put Chelsea 1-0 up.

Maresca will give the latest on the condition of Chalobah in his post-match press conference after full-time.
