The Celtics managed to remain among the NBA’s top teams this season despite spending much of the year without Jayson Tatum, finishing with 56 wins and another playoff appearance.
Still, Boston’s front office believes there are areas that must improve if the team hopes to make a deeper postseason run.
One concern is the offense’s tendency to settle for perimeter shots, particularly when defenses tighten in the playoffs.
Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens noted that the team often struggled to generate quality looks early in possessions.
“I will say that I look at more each shot individually, and my general feeling watching us play in really each of the last two playoffs – the second round against New York, even against Orlando in the first round – was we had a hard time generating really good looks on that first shot,” Stevens said.
Rather than focusing solely on three-point volume, Stevens pointed to the need for a more balanced attack that puts greater pressure on opponents near the basket.
“So, we’ve got to figure out a way to do better in that,” he said.
Stevens also indicated that internal improvement alone may not be enough.
“And I think that one of the things that we’ve got to figure out is how to have more of an impact at the rim. And I think we do need to add to our team to do that.”
