BUZZARDS BAY, Mass — Bucs football played their home opener on Friday evening in Buzzards Bay against WestConn, arguably the toughest opponent on the 2024 schedule for Maritime. The Buccaneers could only muster six points in the fourth quarter and were beaten by the Wolves, 45-6.

- Zach Proctor led the Buccaneers offensive attack with 69 yards on the ground with a touchdown on 15 carries.
- James Cassidy totaled 36 yards on the ground on 12 carries.
- Defensively, Joshua Cannon had six total tackles with five of them of the solo variety.
- Kieran Glover had an interception in the loss.
- On special teams, punter Logan Tsika punted seven times for 257 total yards with an average of 36.7 yards per punt and pinned the Wolves inside their own 20 yard line twice.
WestConn
- Starting quarterback Keion Jones threw for 250 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He completed 15-of-23 passes on the day.
- John Giller came in in relief of Jones and completed seven of eight passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns.
- On the ground, Kamryn Holmes ram the ball 10 times for 63 yards.
- Third string quarterback Dylan Jackson came in late for the Wolves and ran once for 13 yards and a score.
- Julian Ferguson caught eight passes in the game for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Soriano, Markuz Faucett, and Dae’shawn Allen each caught a touchdown pass in the win.
- Defensively, Eamon Moran made 11 tackles, had a half sack and two tackles for loss. The Wolves combined for three sacks and 10 tackles for loss.
- On special teams, Kicker Anthony Weidtman converted all six of his extra point attempts and made his only field goal attempt from 28 yards. He also punted once for 39 yards.
How It Happened
The Wolves scored on their first play from scrimmage after a Bucs three-and-out on the first possession of the game. Jones found Ferguson for a 49-yard score and put the Wolves up 7-0 early. Later in the first, Faucett caught his touchdown from Jones from 29 yards out and the Wolves led 14-0 after one quarter of play.
In the second, the only points came on a Weidtman 28-yard field goal and WestConn led the Buccaneers at the half, 17-0.
Halfway through the third quarter, Jones founr Soriano for an 18-yard touchdown that put the Wolves up 24-0. With just over a minute left in the quarter, WestConn drove down field again for a score. This time, it was Giller to Ferguson from one yard out to make the score 31-0.
In the fourth, the Wolves scored with 9:45 on left in the game on Gillers second touchdown toss. This time to Allen from 13 yards away and WestConn extended their lead to 38-0. The Buccaneers erased the shutout with under five minutes to play on their best drive of the game that ended on a one-yard touchdown run by Proctor. The Bucs went for two following the score and were unsuccessful. The Wolves led 38-6. WestConn put the icing on the win with two minutes remaining when Jackson ran it in to the end zone from 13 yards out. The Wovles led 45-6 and went on to win by that same score.
What’s Next
The Buccaneers travel to Castleton next Saturday, September 21st, to take on the Spartans in conference play at 12pm. The meeting marks the first meeting ever between the two teams.
