WESTFIELD, Mass — The Buccaneers football team, gearing up for their 52nd season of play, has been picked to finish sixth this season in the MASCAC by the conference’s head football coaches.
Last season, the Buccaneers posted a 2-8 record and were 2-6 in conference play. This season, they will have a new look and feel on both sides of the ball with a host of new coaches and plenty of young talent on the roster to boost the experience of the juniors and seniors on the team.
This year, the Buccaneers will get nine shots at MASCAC opponents with the addition of Vermont State Castleton to the mix.
In the preseason poll, last year’s champions, UMass Dartmouth, have been voted to finish first with WestConn right behind them in second. Bridgewater State, Framingham State, and Plymouth State round out the top five before we get to the Bucs in sixth.
At the bottom of the conference and behind Maritime, in order, are Westfield State, Castleton, Worcester State, and Fitchburg State.
The Buccaneers open their season on Friday, September 6th in New York against SUNY Maritime for the 16th playing of the Chowder Bowl. They will play their home opener the following week on Friday, September 13th against the WestConn Wolves.
Other notable games on the schedule include homecoming weekend against Plymouth State on September 28th, their Senior Day game on Halloween against Westfield State, and of course the 45th playing of the Cranberry Bowl at Bridgewater State to close out the regular season on November 16th.
