Arsenal release Takehiro Tomiyasu injury statement after knee surgery as return timeframe revealed

Arsenal have confirmed Takehiro Tomiyasu has undergone successful knee surgery, with the defender not expected to return to action until the end of the year.

The 26-year-old has made just one appearance for the Gunners this season after picking up an injury to his right knee during pre-season. The former Bologna man continued to have issues after coming off the bench against Southampton in October and will now not feature again this season.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Arsenal said: “Takehiro Tomiyasu has undergone a successful surgery on the right knee issue which he first sustained in pre-season. Despite an initial surgical procedure in August, followed by a return to full training, and featuring as a substitute in our home Premier League match against Southampton in October, Tomi continued to have issues with his knee, resulting in a further corrective surgical procedure.

“Tomi will now begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, which is expected to be completed towards the end of this year. Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Tomi to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Tomiyasu took to Instagram on Tuesday to confirm that he had undergone surgery, with the defender admitting it has been the “toughest period” in his career. Tomiyasu said: “I’m late in reporting this, but I had surgery on my right knee a few days ago and have already started my rehab to do what I love the most again.

“It has been the toughest period in my career for sure and it carries on a bit more but I won’t give up. Thank you for your support and see you again.”

Tomiyasu has struggled with a number of injuries during his time at Emirates Stadium, with the right-back sustaining hamstring, calf and knee injuries since moving from Bologna in August 2021. Arsenal do have Ben White back fit now, however, while Jurrien Timber has performed well in the right-back role for the majority of the season.
