Arsenal make Mathys Tel transfer move that opens up Benjamin Sesko dream scenario

Arsenal have reportedly reached out to the representatives of Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel ahead of a last minute deal in the January transfer window.

Tel has been a hot topic of conversation in the last week of the window having announced his intention to leave the Bavarian club before the deadline. Tottenham Hotspur had been pushing hard to sign the winger for £50m but having reached an agreement with the Bundesliga team, the teenager rejected the approach.

It is understood that Tel wants a loan switch in January to allow his options to remain open for the summer. According to The Guardian, the initial contact between the Gunners and the winger’s representatives has been positive and Mikel Arteta’s side have received encouragement that they would be able to complete a deal.

However, Arsenal have yet to reach an agreement with Bayern over a loan switch and whether that would include an obligation to buy. Manchester United are also reported to be keeping a close eye on Tel too with Marcus Rashford set to join Aston Villa on loan.

If the Gunners were able to reach an agreement with Tel, the winger could be used as a temporary option to bolster the attack at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal would need to wait until the summer to make a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

The report claims that Sesko has an agreement in place with his Bundesliga club to leave for £60m at the end of the season which could tempt the Gunners. If this is the case, Arsenal could welcome Tel on a straight loan until the end of the campaign to tide them over.

Arteta has previously spoken about his desire to sign a forward this month, saying: “If we can get the right player, that’s what we are actively looking at, but any player – no, we need someone that makes us better and makes an impact on the team.

“We have very, very short numbers for many, many weeks and they recognise the situation, we all do. That’s why we are trying to do what is right for the club, the team, that’s our intention.”

Arteta was asked whether his side had identified targets and he replied: “Yes.”
