Arsenal legend Ian Wright had a close call after falling down a set of stairs on Monday night after co-hosting the Women’s Euros draw in Switzerland.
Wright was given an ice pack following his fall. Luckily, the Arsenal icon shook off the incident without any serious harm—even flying back to Manchester as scheduled the next Tuesday morning. According to reports from the Daily Mail, following his fall, legendary players Leonardo Bonucci of Italy and Sami Khedira of Germany were quick to assist him.
What makes his recovery all the more relieving is that just seven weeks prior, the former forward underwent major knee surgery, leading him to use a wheelchair temporarily. A prominent supporter of women’s football, Wright witnessed the Lionesses – led by coach Sarina Wiegman – being placed in Group D, with France, Wales and the Netherlands for Euro 2025.
As the current champions prepare to defend their title in Switzerland next summer, the ex-Arsenal striker remains upbeat, having taken to Instagram to express his enthusiasm about the night’s events.
Wright shared snaps of the occasion, captioning them: “Special night co-hosting the Euro 2025 draw with Annette Fetscherin. England drawn in Group D with France, Netherlands and Wales.”
The TV pundit’s Instagram story captured his smiles backstage at the draw for the 16-team tournament, set to be held across eight venues in Switzerland from July 2 to 27 next year.
“The draw was nice. The group is tough! These are the facts and we knew how the pots were that it would be difficult anyway,” England manager Wiegman remarked, having led the team to a striking win in 2022.
“The women’s game is developing so quickly, so I don’t think there are easy things anymore. We have to be ready for every single game. The women’s game has changed. Before we went to the qualifiers for the World Cup, it was kind of easy.”
“Sometimes you could predict if you were going to win. In sport, it’s really good when it’s unpredictable because that’s the exciting bit about it.”
