West Ham have reportedly tried to move ahead of their Premier League rivals for the signature of Jonathan David. Arsenal have been one of the clubs in the mix for the 25-year-old.
David is coming to the end of his contract at Lille in the summer and is expected to have a host of clubs lining up for his signature. One of those clubs is West Ham, who have already held talks with his agents, according to talkSPORT.
The Lille forward, known for his clinical finishing, has made it clear he’ll be departing the French outfit when the season concludes, sparking widespread conjecture about where he’ll land next.
“Yes, I will be free at the end of the season. And as for my future, I hope to grow, to become a better player and to play for the biggest clubs in the world, if I can,” David revealed to Onze Mondial.
“But first of all, I just want to have fun, never forget that football is fun. I started playing football because I had fun. And even though it has now become a job, you have to remember that I wake up every morning for football, for the pleasure of playing.
“Do you want any clues about my future? You will all know in due time, that is at the end of the season. I will not comment before then.”
Despite West Ham’s ambitious approach, it’s said that David is ‘expected to snub’ the Hammers. Besides Arsenal, Manchester United, Barcelona and Inter Milan are said to be chasing the prolific striker.
However, his signature is expected to come at a cost, with the Canada international likely to demand a high wage. After missing out on previous occasions to sign a striker, Mikel Arteta’s side are expected to address the attacking department in the summer.
