Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu has opened up on the “toughest period” of his career after undergoing surgery on his right knee – but admitted he “won’t give up” and is determined to come back stronger.
The Japan international has played just six minutes of football this season, coming on as a late substitute in the Premier League win over Southampton in October. That followed a three-month absence from a knee issue that meant he missed the start of the campaign.
It was reported earlier this month that the Gunners were considering surgery for Tomiyasu in a bid to cure his troublesome knee problem. And now, the 26-year-old has revealed that he has been under the knife in an attempt to recover from the injury and be fit for next season.
In an Instagram post, Tomiyasu said: “I’m late in reporting this, but I had surgery on my right knee a few days ago and have already started my rehab to do what I love the most again.
“It has been the toughest period in my career for sure and it carries on a bit more but I won’t give up. Thank you for your support and see you again.”
Tomiyasu’s post was accompanied by a photo that saw him on crutches and with his knee in a brace and supported with plaster. A number of Arsenal fans were quick to show their support to the defender.
Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of Tomiyasu. After impressing for the Gunners during the 2023/24 season, the Arsenal boss heaped praise on the former Bologna man. “He’s a player that everybody loves in there, he’s always the first and always the last,” Arteta said. “You tell him to do something, and he will give his life for it.
“He’s an exceptional professional player, and he gives us versatility and qualities that nobody else has in the squad, For me, he’s a very important player. Tomi adapts to it in a really natural way so it’s so good to have him.”
