LeBron James made his last decision, signing with the Philadelphia 76ers after weeks of waiting to see whether the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Speaking to options he did not choose, Warriors insider Anthony Slater explained how the organization missed their central objective this offseason.
“The Warriors could have pitched the spectacle of a legendary pairing with Stephen Curry, the proximity to his family in Los Angeles and the fun he could have in a relaxed environment with longtime friends, but that wasn’t enough. Plus, they didn’t make an offseason trade to make it more appealing. LeBron decided elsewhere, and the Warriors have been under the belief it was trending that way for weeks,” Slate said.
Meanwhile, Golden State had higher odds of making a championship run because of age numbers, along with Curry and Draymond Green, unless they make a move to acquire help.
“Number one, they’re in the West. The Thunder and Spurs are out there; I can understand LeBron thinking it’s a tougher path,” Slater added.
For now, the reports did not include second options if Golden State failed to acquire James, but said to consider Green’s salary and re-sign Gary Payton II.
