Six weeks to decide everything: Bucks owner drops truth bomb on Giannis future

Milwaukee’s long-term direction around Giannis Antetokounmpo has shifted into a defined decision window, with co-owner Jimmy Haslam outlining a clear timeline for one of the franchise’s most significant choices in years.

Speaking on Wednesday, May 6, Haslam addressed the ongoing speculation around the Bucks’ superstar and emphasized the complexity of communication in modern NBA negotiations. “We never had any problem communicating directly with Giannis at all and always knew where he stood and I think he always knew where we stood,” he said.

Haslam described how multiple layers impact discussions around a player of Antetokounmpo’s stature. “Communications are complicated at times because you have agents involved, you have all the press involved, you have the player involved,” he said.

He also confirmed that conversations have already taken place since the end of the season, with a firm timeframe now set for a resolution. “We’ve had those kind of conversations since the season was over. And like I said, the draft is June 23rd and 24th. So sometime over the next six or seven weeks, we’ll decide whether Giannis is going to sign a max contract and stay with us or he’s going to play somewhere else.”

The Bucks’ ownership group, including general manager Jon Horst, new head coach Taylor Jenkins, and Haslam himself, is expected to be central in that decision. “Jon, Taylor, along with Wes and myself, will make that call. And we understand the gravity of that call.”

Antetokounmpo remains under contract for multiple seasons, entering the second year of a three-year, $175 million deal with a player option on the final year. His production remains at an elite level, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists on efficient scoring inside the arc.

NBA insider Marc Stein added further context on the timeline, writing: “Giannis Antetokounmpo is not contract extension-eligible until October … but Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam said today after Taylor Jenkins’ introductory news conference that the team wants to resolve Giannis’ Milwaukee future before next month’s NBA Draft.”

Stein also reported Milwaukee’s internal transparency during its coaching search. “Haslam also said that the Bucks were ‘straight up’ with Taylor Jenkins before hiring him as the Bucks’ new coach by telling Jenkins that Giannis ‘may or may not be with us.’”

Despite that production, Milwaukee’s team results have added pressure to the situation. The Bucks finished the 2025-26 season with a 32-50 record and missed the playoffs, placing the franchise in an offseason defined by restructuring decisions and long-term roster evaluation.

League attention is now focused on whether Milwaukee commits fully to building around Antetokounmpo or considers alternative pathways that could include trade exploration or a recalibrated roster direction.

With the draft approaching and the franchise entering a critical six-to-seven-week window, the Bucks’ next move carries implications that extend well beyond the roster, shaping the competitive direction of the Eastern Conference landscape.
