The Portland Trail Blazers are reportedly considering a change at head coach, even though interim leader Tiago Splitter helped end a five-year playoff drought.
If Portland decides to look elsewhere, they are not expected to pursue an expensive hire.
Owner Tom Dundon is believed to have set a limit of about $1.5 million per year for the position. That number falls well below the standard salary for NBA head coaches and aligns more with what top assistants earn.
It’s also significantly less than the pay of leading college coaches, which could make attracting a top-tier candidate more difficult.
Splitter remains in the mix to stay on the job if a new agreement can be reached.
Taking over after the first game of the season, he guided the team to a 42–39 finish and then led them through the Play-In Tournament to secure the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
