Guglielmo Vicario has revealed he faced a small setback during his recovery from injury that resulted in him having surgery for the second time. Keeping a clean sheet in Tottenham’s emphatic 4-0 win at Manchester City back in November, it was announced two days later that the goalkeeper had undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle that he sustained in the game at the Etihad Stadium.
A tough period for the player as he worked his way back to fitness, the 28-year-old opened up on the new blow he had to deal with in December when discussing his road to recovery on Tottenham’s ‘The Comeback: Vicario’ documentary. Fresh from having his “best day in the last two months” as he continued to put in the hard work in his recovery, Vicario stated that going under the knife for a second time made it a “very tough, tough day” for him.
Speaking about his ankle in late December, he said: “Something has happened, it does not look right today. I need to speak to the doctor and see.”
He went on to say: “So, this one has been a tricky one. There was a stitch on the ankle, a dissolvable one that my body didn’t dissolve. I went to the hospital and we had this small surgery in the theatre again, second time in the last seven weeks.
“It has been a very tough, tough day because suddenly from being the best day in the last two months, it has become the worst day. So, it’s all part of the process.
“Sometimes you can have small setbacks that didn’t depend on you, but it is what it is. So just looking forward, confident to be back in training.”
During the documentary, Vicario opened up on the struggles he faced having always felt “invincible” when playing regularly.
“I’m trying to be the best version of myself day by day and keep progressing,” he said. “I think it’s a process in which you have to believe. It’s not just about believing but it’s just understanding and listening. Everyone knows I’m fully committed and I have to do every day the best I demand for myself.
“I try to plan week by week so I know exactly what I need to do and what I demand for myself. Sometimes you have days which are maybe harder, but I know that if I don’t do literally everything that I set my mind on, I will not be happy.
“When you regularly play, you think you are invincible, you are unbeatable. You are literally a machine because you think: ‘Nothing can happen to me, you know?’ But then of course we are human beings and life is this so you have to deal with the setbacks. Yeah it’s hard, of course it’s hard because I miss what I love to do.
“Yeah, of course, you have to see things in a different way and just wait your time to be able to play. I just have to accept what happened to me.”
Vicario’s return to the Tottenham team could not have gone any better as he helped the Lilywhites record a 1-0 win over Manchester United by making some key saves during the contest. It was indeed a “big day” for him after the hours he had put in to return to full fitness.
“My first game after a while and I made some good saves but still a lot of work to do,” he confessed. “After three months with two screws in the ankle, it was very tough. But I’m happy to be back here and to do what I love to do, so this is the best moment for me today.”
He added: “It has been a top day. Of course, the big win, the clean sheet, so I got the best that I could aim for. It has made today a big day for me and this is reality. Now we go again.”
