Chelsea player ratings as Filip Jorgensen makes howler and Malo Gusto poor in Aston Villa loss

Chelsea’s terrible run in the Premier League continues with Enzo Maresca’s players throwing away a one-goal lead to lose at Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Maresca switched a load of players in what was an unconventional Blues line-up. The early signs from Villa Park were that the change in setup was working with Pedro Neto putting the ball on a plate for Enzo Fernandez to open the scoring on nine minutes.

Marco Asensio levelled for Villa not too long after half-time, with VAR overturning the referee’s initial offside call. Marcus Rashford was being played onside at the far post and the Manchester United loanee found Asensio with a fine ball across the face of goal.

Asensio was on hand to break Chelsea hearts just before stoppage time. A terrible mistake from Filip Jorgensen allowed Villa to take all three points in another really disappointing away trip for the Blues.

Filip Jorgensen – 5

Did really well positionally to save Ollie Watkins’ close-range effort in the first-half, and not much he could do about the first goal. A great save on 88 minutes to deny Donyell Malen. Then, seconds later, from the resulting corner, an absolute howler to allow Asensio to score again.

Malo Gusto – 4

Gave it away a couple of times – needlessly, too. Asleep at the back post when Rashford was alive and that cost Chelsea a goal.

Trevoh Chalobah – N/A

Off after less than eight minutes with an injury.

Levi Colwill – 6

Great defending on Watkins 31 minutes in, budging him aside to win the ball back as the Villa striker closed down on the Chelsea goal.

Marc Cucurella – 7

A phenomenal block on 21 minutes to prevent Watkins’ shot at least testing Jorgensen. Excellent performance from the Spanish defender.

Reece James – 6

Played in the centre of midfield and it was great to see him back there. An impressive display considering he has not played there for quite some time now.

Moises Caicedo – 6

Not at his absolute best. Did okay but didn’t have the same impact as usual. A defence-splitting pass for Palmer, but wasn’t rewarded with an assist.

Enzo Fernandez – 8

Great to see him pop up in that position inside the six-yard box again. Overall, a top display from the Argentine, who seems to love playing football at Villa Park.

Cole Palmer – 5.5

Looks to have lost a bit of confidence in front of goal. So close to scoring on 70 minutes. Had to score on 76 minutes after being fed by Moises Caicedo.

Christopher Nkunku – 5

Just didn’t get involved anywhere near enough. Struggling to see what he adds to the Chelsea attack at the moment, which is sad to say given the Frenchman’s ability.

Pedro Neto – 7

Played as the No.9 but ironically, it was some superb work from the right wing that set up the first goal for Fernandez. Brilliant one-on-one – as we all know he is – against Ian Maatsen, before putting the ball on a plate for Fernandez. So much better from the Portuguese.
