Arsenal could be braced to a summer transfer blow with Real Madrid eyeing a swoop for target Martin Zubimendi.
football.london understands that the Gunners have been long admirers of Zubimendi, who has a release clause worth €60million (£49m) in his contract. It’s believed that Arsenal have been following the Spaniard for over a year, with interest dating back to the summer of 2023.
With Thomas Partey and Jorginho set to leave once their contracts expire in the summer, the Gunners have been tipped to complete a move for Zubimendi. The Mail report they are ‘ready’ to trigger his release clause with talks said to be at an ‘advanced stage’.
The report adds that Arsenal stepped up their interest following the uncertainty over the aforementioned duo. However, after a quiet January transfer window, they could be dealt a blow in their pursuit for Zubimendi.
The Athletic reports that there are ‘increasing discussions’ over the midfielder at the Bernabeu. The Spanish giants, who are looking to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer from Liverpool, are also looking at reinforcing their defensive options.
Speaking about his future in November, Zubimendi said: “There will always be rumours and now that January is approaching, there will be [now] too, but I don’t waste energy on outside noise. I’m happy with the way I’m handling it and I’m going to handle it.”
Liverpool tried to sign the 26-year-old last summer but a deal collapsed late into the transfer window. Zubimendi then explained his decision to stay at his boyhood club Real Sociedad, saying: “I didn’t have any pressure from my close circle.
“My friends are clear that whatever I decide, it will be the best. There is no pressure at all. Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I’ve been in there for half my life. A lot of what I am is part of Real, it’s my life.”
