Mathys Tel makes final Tottenham transfer decision after Daniel Levy talks and Bayern ‘deal’

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major blow to their hopes of signing Mathys Tel this month. The Bayern Munich forward has been heavily linked with numerous Premier League clubs during the January transfer window, having failed to force himself into Vincent Kompany’s side.

Tel, who sees his contract at the Allianz Arena expire in June 2029, has only featured eight times in the Bundesliga this season, starting just twice. Despite playing less than 300 minutes in the German top flight, the 19-year-old has still managed to attract interest from some top teams.

On Friday morning, Bayern Munich announced that they reached a verbal agreement with Tottenham for the transfer of Tel. The Bavarians’ director revealed that more talks will be held in the ‘coming days and hours’, refusing to detail the specifics of the deal.

Speaking to reporters, as quoted by the BBC, Max Eberl said: “Mathys can imagine a move away. We need to come to terms with the facts. Whether it’s a loan or a sale, we’ll see. It needs to be right for all parties. Will we do it? Our squad is very well set up.”

Meanwhile, Kompany added: “What’s important is that the player is still a Bayern player. Every player can be selected until the last moment. My role here is always to use the players available.”

A few hours later, Fabrizio Romano reported that Daniel Levy had touched down in Munich to wrap up a deal. The Tottenham chairman held face-to-face talks with Tel and his agent – but it didn’t quite go to plan.

In the meeting, Romano claims Tel told Levy that he doesn’t want to join Spurs. The Athletic have since added that the France Under-21 international plans to now stay at Bayern Munich until the end of the season and reassess his future in the summer.

Earlier this month, Tel first emerged as a target for Chelsea. football.london understands that the Blues made contact with Bayern Munich over a potential deal for the Frenchman, who they’ve long admired.

Chelsea asked the Bavarians if Tel would be available to sign, following an initial enquiry last summer. football.london understands the west Londoners did not, however, discuss or offer Christopher Nkunku as part of a swap deal.

As Premier League clubs began to swarm over the teenager, Chelsea appeared to take a step back.
