The New Orleans Pelicans and point guard Jose Alvarado have agreed to a two-year, $9 million contract extension, solidifying Alvarado’s role on the team for the near future.

The new deal also guarantees Alvarado’s salary for the current season, locking in just under $2 million before his extension takes effect next year. This extension is a testament to Alvarado’s hard work and growing importance to the Pelicans.

Since joining the team, Alvarado has developed into a key rotation player for the Pelicans, valued for his defensive tenacity and ability to contribute off the bench.

In his three years with New Orleans, the undrafted guard has become known for his energy, hustle, and defensive prowess, earning the nickname “Grand Theft Alvarado” due to his knack for steals.

Last season, he averaged 7.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals in 18.4 minutes per game, providing a spark for the Pelicans’ second unit.

One of the areas in which Alvarado has shown noticeable improvement is his outside shooting. He set a career-high last season by shooting 37.7% from beyond the arc, a marked improvement that has made him a more reliable threat offensively.

His shooting and disruptive defense have helped him carve out a valuable role on the Pelicans’ roster.

This extension rewards Alvarado for his contributions and gives the Pelicans additional roster stability as they continue to build around their core of young players.

With Alvarado locked in, New Orleans can rely on his steady play and leadership to make a deeper run in the Western Conference.

His ability to impact both ends of the floor has made him a fan favorite and a vital part of the Pelicans’ plans.
