Sacramento Kings star Domantas Sabonis, at 28 years old, has expressed his openness to retiring with the team. In a recent interview with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Sabonis discussed the possibility of building a long-term legacy in Sacramento.
When asked if he could see himself retiring with the Kings, Sabonis responded affirmatively. “Yeah, of course. They’ve only been nice. It’s been amazing. The fans have been awesome,” he said. He emphasized that staying in one place is crucial for building a legacy, adding, “You can’t do it if you’re not in one place and doing great things for that team.”
Sabonis acknowledged that his future with the team depends on both his performance and the Kings’ success. He noted that achieving long-term goals with Sacramento would be a meaningful way to end his career. Sabonis has been a key player for the Kings, known for his playmaking ability and dominant presence on the court.
During the 2023–24 NBA season, Sabonis continued to solidify his role as one of the league’s top forwards. On December 18, he recorded his 35th career triple-double with 28 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists in a win over the Washington Wizards. Sabonis continued his impressive performances into the new year, posting a triple-double in a double-overtime victory against the Orlando Magic.
Sabonis reached a career milestone on January 29, when he logged 20 points, a career-high 26 rebounds, and five assists in a win over the Memphis Grizzlies. His shooting percentage during that game was an astounding 90.9%, a feat matched only by Wilt Chamberlain in NBA history.
The Kings’ forward hit another career mark on February 13 when he notched his 50th career triple-double with 35 points, 18 rebounds, 12 assists, and 3 blocks in a close game against the Phoenix Suns. Sabonis continued to dominate the season, setting records and breaking franchise milestones.
One of Sabonis’ most notable achievements during the 2023-24 season was his streak of consecutive double-doubles. On March 12, he recorded his 47th consecutive double-double, surpassing Jerry Lucas’ previous franchise record. By March 25, Sabonis had posted 54 consecutive double-doubles, surpassing Kevin Love for the longest streak since the NBA-ABA merger.
Sabonis’ ability to contribute across multiple categories has been crucial to Sacramento’s success. Last season, he averaged 19.4 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 8.2 assists in 35.7 minutes per game. His consistent production on the court has made him one of the Kings’ most valuable players.
As Sabonis continues to lead the Kings on the court, his thoughts about retiring with the team reflect his commitment to Sacramento. “It depends on my performance and the team’s performance, but that definitely would really be a cool thing,” he said.
