Rockets center Steven Adams didn’t suit up for Houston last season while recovering from right knee surgery, which he underwent during his time with the Memphis Grizzlies.
In his latest piece, Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle delves into how the 31-year-old veteran might be utilized in head coach Ime Udoka’s system for the 2024/25 season.
As Feigen notes, Alperen Sengun, who had a breakout season last year, is expected to maintain his role as the starting center.
Given Sengun’s versatile skill set and offensive focus, it’s unlikely that he and Adams will share the court frequently, as their playing styles are quite different.
However, Adams could play a crucial role in specific matchups that call for his physicality, rebounding, and defensive presence, areas where he thrives.
Adams, known for his toughness and elite screen-setting, may see increased minutes against teams with larger frontcourts or where Houston needs more interior defense and rim protection.
His experience and ability to anchor a defense could be especially valuable in key stretches, even if he isn’t a regular starter.
Additionally, with Adams on an expiring $12.6MM contract, the Rockets may have added incentive to maximize his contributions this season as they weigh their options for the future.
