JJ Redick recently shared details about the moment he decided to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Redick, who transitioned from a successful NBA career to media stardom, made the leap into coaching ahead of the 2024–25 season.
In an interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Redick reflected on his decision. Two weeks before training camp, Redick ran an offseason practice for the Lakers and realized it was time to embrace the challenge. “Put 45 minutes on the clock, got right through it,” Redick said, describing his approach.
Redick, who had no previous coaching experience, acknowledged the weight of the decision. When asked why he took the job, he paused and admitted, “That’s probably the best question.” He explained that his deep understanding of the modern game and relationships with players made him feel ready for this step.
The opportunity to coach the Lakers and work with LeBron James was another key factor. Redick recalled a dinner in Las Vegas where he and James discussed basketball and realized they shared a similar perspective on the game. This conversation strengthened Redick’s desire to coach the Lakers.
Redick also spoke to his former Duke coach, Mike Krzyzewski, who advised him to consider the seriousness of the decision. After explaining his passion for coaching, Redick felt more confident about his choice. “I want to be an NBA coach,” he told Krzyzewski.
Despite advice from some to remain in media, Redick felt a competitive urge to coach. “There’s a competitive itch that I have every single day of my life,” he said. This desire, along with the chance to coach a franchise as historic as the Lakers, ultimately convinced him to accept the role.
Redick also addressed concerns about his relationship with LeBron and whether it played a role in the Lakers’ decision to hire him. Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ general manager, assured him that the team was not focused on finding someone just to coach LeBron’s final years but someone to guide the team’s future as well.
The decision was finalized during a lunch with his father. After stepping away to call LeBron, Redick returned to the table and announced, “I’m in.” This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Redick, who now faces the challenge of leading a Lakers team that includes both LeBron and his son, Bronny James.
As Redick prepares for his first season as an NBA head coach, he acknowledges the pressure but remains confident in his ability to succeed. “There’s no assurances in this industry,” he said. Still, Redick is determined to make the most of the opportunity and help guide the Lakers through this pivotal period.
